Turkey-world’s largest scrap importer has witnessed a marginal rise in its ferrous scrap imports in April as against imports recorded in Mar’18. As per recent customs data, Turkey imported 1,900,820 MT ferrous scrap in Apr’18 witnessing a rise of 4% M-o-M as against 1,833,994 MT ferrous scrap imports in Mar’18.
On yearly premises, Turkey’s scrap imports climbed by 14% Y-o-Y in Apr’18 as against 1,664,124 MT ferrous scrap imports in Apr’17.
Monthly average imported scrap prices declined in Apr’18 – Turkey witnessed fall in scrap prices in the first half of Apr’18. The monthly average import price for USA origin HMS (80:20) moved down to USD 352/MT, CFR in Apr’18 as against USD 370/MT in Mar’18.
Rise in scrap imports in Apr’18 could be attributed to low scrap prices and improved supply from major suppliers like US, Netherland, Belgium and Denmark to Turkey.
On the other hand, Turkey imported 677,326 MT billets and pig iron, down 14% M-o-M in Apr’18. Fall in semi-finish imports could have supported scrap imports in Apr’18.

United States supplied highest volumes of ferrous scrap to Turkey in Apr’18 – United States exported 455,339 MT ferrous scrap registering 40% M-o-M rise in Apr’18 against 333,593 MT exports in Mar’18 to Turkey. United Kingdom remained at second largest exporter’s position witnessing 19% M-o-M fall in Apr’18. UK supplied 268,367 MT scrap in Apr’18 as against 330,889 MT in Mar’18.
Followed by other prominent exporters like Belgium (263,742 MT, +4% M-o-M), Russia (193,710 MT, -24% M-o-M) Netherland (183,819 MT, +6% M-o-M), and Denmark (106,089 MT, +123% M-o-M) respectively in Apr’18.

Turkey scrap imports up 23% Y-o-Y during Jan-Apr’18 – Turkey imported 7.27 MnT ferrous scrap during Jan-Apr’18, up 23% Y-o-Y against 5.91 MnT scrap imports recorded during the same period last year. Increasing steel production from EAF outputs and growing exports of finish steel from country has resulted in the higher volumes of scrap imports this year as against last year in Turkey.
During Jan-Apr’18, United States supplied highest (1.45 MnT, +45% Y-o-Y) occupying 20% share in total ferrous scrap imports in Turkey. United Kingdom supplied 1.11 MnT (+29% Y-o-Y) and remained the second highest exporter to turkey, following which other major exporters were Belgium, Russia and Netherland occupying 12%,11% and 10% share respectively.
According to the data released by World Steel Association, crude steel production in Turkey stood at 12.49 MnT during first four months in CY18, up marginally by 5% Y-o-Y as against 11.88 MnT produced same period last year.
