Turkey: Coal Imports Up 8% Y-o-Y in CY17

 

Turkey’s coal imports were recorded at 44.78 MnT in CY17, as per the data provided by Turkish customs. The country had witnessed a growth of 8% Y-o-Y from 41.39 MnT in CY16, on the back of record- imports of coal in Dec’17.

The country’s coal Imports had been rising on the monthly basis since Oct’17, and had achieved its highest monthly total for the CY17 at 4.74 MnT in Dec’17. Import during the month was also the highest over the two year period (2016-2017).

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Amongst the coal grades that Turkey import, only shipments of Pet coke had fallen on the year. Pet coke imports had decreased 3% Y-o-Y to 4.45 MnT in CY17, compared with 4.58 MnT in CY16.

Non-coking coal imports increased 8% Y-o-Y to 32.98 MnT, besides Coking coal imports were up 6% on the year to 5.43 MnT in CY17.

Anthracite and Met coke imports had also noted significant growth during the year.

Major Coal exporters:
Colombia remained the top coal exporter in CY17. The country had supplied 17.76 MnT coal to Turkey during the year, 14% more than they had managed in CY16.

Russia was the second-largest exporter during the year, with total coal quantity of 14.78 MnT in CY17. US came behind at third, recording exports of 5.54 MnT coal. Both these countries had also noted growth in yearly coal shipments to Turkey.

South Korea, Australia, Canada, Venezuela and China were among the other major coal exporters in CY17.
