Turkey’s coal imports have rebounded after falling in Aug’18 to attain 38% growth in Sep’18. As per the data provided by Turkish customs, coal import by the country was marked at 4.15 MnT against 3.01 MnT in Aug’18.
On the yearly basis, Coal receipt in Sep’18 was up 7% from the imports of 3.87 MnT recorded in Sep’17.
The rise in coal import was supported by a strong utilization ratio coming from the country’s coal-fired power plants which is likely to remain firm in the last three months of CY18, driven by winter demand.
Total coal imports in the first 9-months of CY18 (Jan’18-Sep’18) has reached 32.58 MnT in Sep’18, up 4% Y-o-Y from 31.19 MnT in same period last year.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Imports of all the major coal grades have increased on the monthly basis in Sep’18, except-Met coke.
Non-Coking coal imports were up 26% M-o-M to 2.89 MnT in Sep’18 compared with 2.29 MnT in Aug’18. Coking coal imports witnessed 2-fold increase to attain its highest monthly total of 0.64 MnT for the CY18.
Met Coke imports, although small in quantity, had fell 64% on the month to 0.05 MnT in Sep’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Russia overtook Colombia to become the largest coal exporter to Turkey in Sep’18, also recording its highest monthly total for CY18 in the process.
Russian coal exports increased 53% M-o-M to 1.61 MnT in Sep’18 which was also 7% higher on the year compared with 1.5 MnT in Sep’17.
Colombia slid to second position despite recording a 5% growth in monthly coal supplies to Turkey, marked at 1.41 MnT in Sep’18.
US was the third-largest coal supplier to Turkey, with exports of 0.71 MnT coal in Sep’18.
