Turkey: Coal Imports Down 9% M-o-M in Feb’19

Turkish coal imports have fallen 9% on the month in Feb’19, following a hefty decline in non-coking coal shipments. Preliminary data from customs indicate that the country has imported 3.12 MnT coal in Feb’19 against 3.44 MnT in Jan’19.

Imports also continued its decline on the yearly basis for the second successive month, as they were down 15% from 3.68 MnT in Feb’18.

A grade-wise break-up indicates that imports of non-coking coal in Feb’19 had fallen to its lowest monthly total since Apr’17, decreasing 25% on the month to 2.08 MnT.

Coking coal imports, however, doubled during the month recorded at 0.54 MnT in Feb’19.

Anthracite coal import fell to 0.05 MnT in Feb’19 in comparison to 0.06 MnT in Jan’19.

Pet coke and Met coke shipments were recorded at 0.43 MnT and 0.02 MnT respectively in Feb’19.

Quantity in MnT

Turkey has imported 6.56 MnT coal in total during the first two months of CY19.

Major Coal Exporters:
Turkey had witness increased deliveries from Australia and US on the monthly basis, but it was insufficient to offset the slump in shipments recorded from Russia and South Korea.

Colombia remained the largest coal supplier in Feb’19. The country had exported 1.34 MnT coal to Turkey, rising 2% on the month from 1.31 MnT in Jan’19 but 26% lower on the year from 1.81 MnT in Feb’18.

Russian coal exports were down 26% M-o-M to 0.88 MnT in Feb’19, but were 19% higher Y-o-Y.

Australia replaced South Korea to become the third-largest coal exporter in Feb’19.Australian exports jumped 350% on the month to 0.36 MnT, whereas supplies from South Korea slumped to 0.04 MnT in Feb’19.
