Turkish coal imports fell to a 7-month low during Feb’20, although the volume continued its growth Y-o-Y from the levels seen in the year-ago month.
Data provided by Turkish customs indicate that imports by the country dropped 17% M-o-M to 3.29 MnT in Feb’20 as against 3.98 MnT in Jan’20. However, imports were marked 5% higher on the year from 3.12 MnT noted in Feb’19.
The hefty decline on the monthly basis was attributed to lower intake of non-coking coal shipments, which decreased 22% on the month to 2.47 MnT. Whereas, coking coal imports increased 19% M-o-M to 0.37 MnT in Feb’20.

Quantity in MnT
Market participants have anticipated that Turkish coal imports would likely rise this year, on account of lower hydro-power output and the suspension of some lignite plant capacity, which have already started to show signs of improvement.
During the first two months of CY20 (Jan-Feb), the country has taken 7.27 MnT coal, which was 11% more than the volume accumulated in the corresponding period of CY19.
Major Coal Exporters:
Colombia remained the largest coal supplier to Turkey in Feb’20. Exports by the country fell 17% M-o-M to 1.56 MnT, but were up 16% Y-o-Y from 1.34 MnT in Feb’19.
Russia (1.09 MnT), US (0.49 MnT) and Canada (0.08 MnT) were some of the other noticeable exporters in Feb’20.
