Thermal Coal export prices from Australia have hit the highest in 2017, being driven by strong demand emanating from the key global markets.
Export prices of the coal from the Newcastle terminal have risen to USD 103.5/MT FoB, which is the highest during this year. As a matter of fact, the FoB prices for the coal from the terminal are regarded as the benchmark prices in Asia.
The prices were buoyed by the strong import tendency among consumers in China. Thermal power plants there are now in an importing spree for stocking the coal inventory for the winter season, when demand for power will rise to the peak. At the same time, the demand for the coal in Australia is strengthened further due to some loading delays in Indonesia.
Imports of the coal in China had risen to 25.27 MnT in Aug’17, reflecting the strong import propensity. The imports were the highest since Dec’17.
