Thailand: Ferrous Scrap Imports Jump Three Fold in Aug’17

Thailand-one of the emerging market in terms of steel industry in Southeast Asia has witnessed a significant rise in ferrous scrap imports by more than three folds on monthly premises in Aug’17.

As per recent customs data, Thailand has registered mammoth surge by 215 % M-o-M in its ferrous scrap imports as country imported 0.22 MnT ferrous scrap in Aug’17 against 0.07 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Jul’17.

Thailand’s crude steel production has increased 3% Y-o-Y to 2.61 MnT during Jan-Aug’17 compared to 2.53 MnT in the same time period last year.

Scrap imports in Aug’17 have marked as the highest so far in CY17.Thailand’s ferrous scrap imports summed at 0.90 MnT during CY16.

During first eight months of CY17, Thailand imported 0.89 MnT ferrous scrap, up 26 % Y-o-Y against 0.71 MnT ferrous scrap imports during Jan-Aug’16.

On yearly premises, ferrous scrap imports grew by 175 % Y-o-Y in Aug’17 as imports were at 0.08 MnT in Aug’16.

United States remains the preferred scrap supplier to Thailand –

United States continued to remain the largest supplier of ferrous scrap to Thailand. In Aug’17, United State exported 0.07 MnT ferrous scrap to Thailand followed by Australia and China as both exported 0.03 MnT in Aug’17.

Other major exporters of ferrous scrap to Thailand in Aug’17 were Philippines (0.02 MnT), South Korea (0.01 MnT), Panama (0.01 MnT) and Vietnam (0.01 MnT).

China exported three folds higher ferrous scrap to Thailand in Aug ’17 against 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Jul’17.

During Jan-Aug’17, United States exported highest 0.33 MnT ferrous scrap occupying 37% share of ferrous scrap imports in Thailand followed by Australia occupied 8%, while China and Philippines shared 6% each.
