Thailand: Ferrous Scrap Imports Increase Marginally in Oct’17

Thailand-one of the emerging market in terms of steel industry in Southeast Asia has witnessed marginal increase in its monthly ferrous scrap imports in Oct’17. As per recently released customs data, Thailand imported 0.14 MnT ferrous scrap in Oct’17, up 8% M-o-M against 0.13 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Sept’17.

Notably, on monthly basis imports in Oct’17 mounted to the second highest so far in CY17.Thailand had imported highest 0.22 MnT ferrous scrap in Aug’17.

On yearly premises, ferrous scrap imports to Thailand hiked by 27% Y-o-Y in Oct’17 against 0.11 MnT imports in Oct’16.

During first ten months of CY17, Thailand imported 1.16 MnT ferrous scrap, up 40% against 0.83 MnT ferrous scrap imports during Jan-Oct’16.

United States remained as the largest supplier of ferrous scrap to Thailand –

During Jan-Oct’17, United States exported highest 0.37 MnT ferrous scrap occupying 32% share of total ferrous scrap imports in Thailand followed by the second largest exporter as China with 0.13 MnT ferrous scrap exports. Other major exporters of ferrous scrap to Thailand were Australia (0.09 MnT), Philippines (0.07 MnT) and South Korea (0.04 MnT) respectively.

In Oct’17, United States and China both exported highest 0.03 MnT ferrous scrap to Thailand and occupied equal shares followed by other major exporters like Australia, Philippines, Panama and Hong Kong with each of 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap exports respectively.

In CY17, China elevated as the second highest exporter of ferrous scrap to Thailand. Exports from China have grown sharply against minor figures corresponding to CY16.

Thailand’s crude steel output is expected to have grown by 7% Y-o-Y to 3.46 MnT during Jan-Oct’17 compared to 3.24 MnT in the same time frame last year.

Thailand steel industry is majorly dominated by rolling mills and most of them make use of electric arc furnace route thus making the country a major scrap consumer. Few of the major steel producers in Thailand include G Steel, Tata Steel Thailand, Sahaviriya Steel Industries PLC.
