Thailand-one of the emerging market in terms of the steel industry in Southeast Asia has witnessed an increase in its ferrous scrap imports in Nov’17. As per recently released customs data, Thailand imported 0.16 MnT ferrous scrap in Nov’17, up by 14% M-o-M in Nov’17 against 0.14 MnT imports in Oct’17.
On yearly basis, The ferrous scrap imports to Thailand hiked mammoth 700% against 0.02 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Nov’16.Thus ferrous scrap imports increased eight folds Y-o-Y in Nov’17 in Thailand.
Notably, on monthly premises imports in Nov’17 mounted to the second highest so far in CY17.Thailand had imported highest 0.22 MnT ferrous scrap in Aug’17 while ferrous scrap imports in Nov’16 were noted at the second least in CY16.
During first eleven months of CY17, Thailand imported 1.32 MnT ferrous scrap, up 55% against 0.85 MnT ferrous scrap imports during Jan-Nov’16.
United States remained the largest supplier of ferrous scrap to Thailand –
During Jan-Nov’17, United States exported highest 0.41 MnT ferrous scrap occupying 31% share of total ferrous scrap imports in Thailand followed China at 0.16 MnT ferrous scrap exports. Other major exporters of ferrous scrap to Thailand were Australia (0.10 MnT), Philippines (0.07 MnT) and Japan (0.04 MnT) respectively.
In Nov’17, United States exported highest 0.04 MnT and China exported 0.02 MnT ferrous scrap to Thailand followed by other major exporters like Australia, Japan, Panama and Myanmar with each of 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap exports respectively.
In CY17, China emerged as the second highest exporter of ferrous scrap to Thailand. The exports from China have grown sharply against in CY16.
Thailand steel industry is majorly dominated by rolling mills and most of them make use of electric arc furnace route thus making the country a major scrap consumer. Few of the major steel producers in Thailand include G Steel, Tata Steel Thailand, Sahaviriya Steel Industries PLC.
According to World Steel Association, crude steel production of Thailand has increased to 4.08 MnT in first eleven months of CY17 compared to 3.5 MnT in same time frame last year.
