Thailand Billet Imports Slip by 61%, Apr’17-Jan’18

Billet imports to Thailand reported a decline of 61% in the first 10 months of fiscal year 2018, the trade statistics released by the Thailand custom reported.

The nation has imported about 1.46 MnT Billet in Apr’17-Jan’18 against 3.78 MnT in Apr’16-Jan’17, decline by 61.37% on yearly premises.

During this period (Apr’17-Jan’18), Iran has exported approximately 47% billet (0.69 MnT) to the nation. Prior to this, in Apr’16-Jan’17 the country’s billet import was around 4.20 MnT & major imports were done from China & reported at 1.65 MnT ( around 39%)

Further, on Y-o-Y in Jan 2018 imports registered a fall of 11.11% & stood at 0.16 MnT against 0.18 MnT in Jan 2017. Inline on month basis, imports decline by 5.88% in Jan’18 against 0.17 in Dec’17.

In Jan,18 – Brazil was the major billet exporter to Thailand which exported around 50,000 MT (31.68%), followed by United Arab Emirates & Iran whose exports stood at 30,000 MT (18.87%) each.

Prior to this, in CY 2017 (Jan-Dec) the country’s billet import was around 1.92 MnT & in CY 2016 at 4.58 MnT.

India continues to remain the largest Pig iron supplier to Thailand.

In FY 2018 (Apr-Jan) – India, Brazil & Vietnam was the major pig iron exporter to Thailand which exported about 170,000 MT, 50,000 MT & 20,000 MT, respectively.

While in Jan 2018, it is observed that the nation has imported about 20,000 MT Pig Iron & the major exports was done by India only

In context to export prices, global offers for steel grade pig Iron is assessed at USD 360-370/MT FoB India & USD 370-375/MT FOB Brazil.
