India: Paddy prices in Telangana reach INR 4,600/qtl as inter-state buying rises

  • Hyderabad retail fine rice prices rise to INR 85-90/kg
  • Strong paddy prices may impact Telangana’s crop diversification push

Private traders from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have intensified paddy procurement directly from farmers in Telangana, offering prices significantly above the minimum support price (MSP) amid rising rice prices and expectations of further increases. The procurement is taking place even before harvesting has been completed in some areas, with traders offering advance payments to secure supplies. Major procurement activity has been reported in Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Khammam and Rangareddy districts.

Paddy prices exceed MSP by a wide margin

Private traders are offering INR 4,000-4,600/quintal, depending on the paddy variety, compared with the central government’s MSP of INR 2,440-2,460/quintal. The Telangana government has also announced a bonus of INR 500/quintal for seven fine rice varieties. Despite the bonus, private offers remain considerably higher than the combined MSP and bonus for eligible varieties, encouraging farmers to enter into advance-payment and supply agreements with traders. Procurement demand, traditionally concentrated in the erstwhile Nizamabad, Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam districts, has also extended to Rangareddy. Traders from Maharashtra are reportedly offering advances in areas such as Moinabad, Shankarpally and Poddutur to secure paddy stocks.

Private traders boost paddy procurement in Telangana

Private traders are attracting farmers by purchasing paddy without the moisture restrictions and other quality checks applied at government procurement centres. Deductions of two to three kilograms per bag for damaged grain and other quality-related reasons can reduce farmers’ realised returns. Waiting times at procurement centres are another factor encouraging direct sales. With government procurement yet to begin for the season at the time of the report, private traders are gaining access to supplies earlier. However, the extent of private procurement and the volume of paddy diverted from government channels have not been quantified.

Hyderabad retail rice prices climb to INR 90/kg

Fine rice prices in Hyderabad’s retail market have increased to INR 85-90/kg. The price of a 25-kg bag has risen by INR 300-400 over the preceding 30-45 days, adding pressure on household budgets and kirana store operators. The increase in retail rice prices has encouraged traders to secure paddy in anticipation of further price appreciation. If this procurement continues at elevated prices, it could increase competition for available supplies and add to upward pressure on rice prices. The extent of the impact will depend on procurement volumes, milling costs, rice availability and consumer demand.

Outlook

Strong private procurement at prices above MSP could support Telangana paddy prices, particularly for fine varieties, as traders compete to secure supplies. However, the impact on retail rice prices will depend on procurement volumes, milling activity and overall availability. Sustained high paddy prices could also influence farmers’ planting decisions for the upcoming Yasangi season, despite the state government’s appeal to diversify cultivation.
