India: Tata Steel not Keen to source Chrome Ore from OMC

Tata Steel is neither keen to source Chrome ore from OMC (Orissa Mining Corporation) nor to import from other countries to run its Ferrochrome plant in Odisha.

Bhubaneswar: Tata Steel, whose Ferrochrome plants have been stopped following the closure of its Chrome mines at in Jajpur district of Odisha, has made it clear that it’ll neither source Chrome ore from OMC nor import from other countries to run the plant.

“We are not looking for importing Chrome ore from other countries or source from Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC), rather we would like to wait for our mine to open. We are pursuing the issue with the government and we are hopeful that the mine will be opened soon,” said TV Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel.

It may be noted that 50,000 MT pa Ferrochrome plant of the company in Keonjhar district has been closed since the beginning of the month owing to raw material problem. Ferrochrome plant of T S Alloys, a fully owned subsidiary of the company, has also been closed in the last week of July. Sukinda Chrome mine of the company has been stopped since May this year.

On the other hand, the next date of hearing of the case filed in the Odisha High Court by several Ferrochrome makers including IMFA has been fixed on 27 Aug, 2014. Odisha government has filed a counter affidavit on 20 Aug, 2014 in the High Court defending its decision to allot the Chrome mine to Tata.
