India: Tata Steel increases Pellet Purchases from Domestic Market in October

Tata Steel, India’s 3^rd largest steel producer with an annual production of over 9 MnT, has increased Pellet purchases from the merchant market in the month of October.

According to special report on Indian Iron ore railway movement maintained by SteelMint, it is noted that Tata Steel has loaded around 25 rakes (each rake contains around 3,900 MT) of Pellets in October. Whereas, movement was nil in the month of September.

The company has been struggling with supply of Iron ore since the Supreme Court had ordered to suspend operations of all the mines running under second deemed renewal.

Tata Steel’s mines, which are located in the state of Odisha & Jharkhand, were running on second deemed renewal.

Odisha government had earlier released express order and allowed captive miners to resume operations, but no such express order was released by the Jharkhand government.

“Since elections have been announced in the state, there can be no major decision taken by the government. Elections are getting over till 29 Dec, 2014. Probably, we may see some development after the election results are out,” said a local officer at mining office in Jharkhand.

Imports in India have breached to 5 MnT in this fiscal year (April- October) owing to restricted supply in the domestic market. Imports will continue to grow on anticipation that mining in Jharkhand may take some time.
