Taiwan: Coal Imports Witness Modest Growth in CY18

According to the data provided by customs, Taiwan has recorded a slight increment y-o-y in coal imports to 69.64 MnT during CY18. The country had imported 69.55 MnT coal in CY17.

The yearly growth in imports although modest was enough for Taiwan to attain a new high in the past 9-years.

Moreover, steady coal imports recorded in the two years under consideration, were comparatively better than the previous year’s record. Notably, Taiwan had recorded y-o-y fall in imports starting from CY14 till CY16.

Major Coal Exporters in CY18:

Australia, Indonesia and Russia remained the top coal exporters to Taiwan, accounting for almost 90% of the total volume in CY18.

Australian coal export to Taiwan increased 4% Y-o-Y to 34.32 MnT in CY18, along with Russia, which had recorded 12% growth in annual coal supplies.

However, coal supplies from Indonesia had fallen 5% Y-o-Y to 17.93 MnT in CY18.

Amongst the rest, South African coal exports to Taiwan decreased 8% on the year to 2.94 MnT in CY18, while Canada had recorded a significant growth of 35% during the year.

China, US, Colombia, Japan and Philippines were the other noticeable coal suppliers in CY18.

Taiwan country-wise coal imports

Monthly Imports in Dec’18: Taiwan’s coal import in Dec’18 rebounded after falling in Nov’18.

The country had imported 5.91 MnT coal up 7% M-o-M from 5.51 MnT in Nov’18, which was also 11% higher on the year compared with 5.31 MnT in Dec’17.

Australia (2.72 MnT), Indonesia (1.5 MnT) and Russia (0.79 MnT) were the major coal suppliers in Dec’18.

South Africa (0.5 MnT) and China (0.34 MnT) had recorded remarkable growth of 213% and 325% on the month respectively.
