Taiwan: Coal Imports Up 9% M-o-M in Mar’18

Taiwan’s coal import has rebounded after falling in Feb’18, to mark highest monthly total for CY18 in Mar’18.

According to the data provided by Taiwan’s customs, coal import by the country has increased 9% on the month to 5.16 MnT in Mar’18 compared with 4.74 MnT in Feb’18. On the yearly basis, coal imports were still 4% lower on the year from 5.35 MnT in Mar’17.

Taiwan’s coal import has fallen short on the year-on-year basis during each of the first 3 months of CY18. Accordingly, total imports recorded during Jan’18-Mar’18 have declined 7% Y-o-Y to 14.98 MnT, compared with 16.18 MnT in Jan’17-Mar’17.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australia, Indonesia and Russia were the top 3 coal suppliers  in Mar’18, contributing almost 90% of the total monthly exports to Taiwan.

Australian coal export to Taiwan had increased 14% on the month to 2.58 MnT in Mar’18, which was also 12% higher on the year compared with 2.3 MnT in Mar’17.Indonesian coal export had also witnessed similar growth during the month.

Russia overtook South Africa to become the third largest coal exporter in Mar’18. Coal export from Russia rose 24% M-o-M to 0.72 MnT, whereas South African coal export to Taiwan dropped 68% on the month to 0.24 MnT in Mar’18.
