Taiwan: Coal Imports Up 8% M-o-M in Apr’18

Taiwan’s coal import has increased for the third successive month in Apr’18, to mark its highest monthly import for the CY18.

As per the data provided by Taiwan’s custom, the country had imported 5.58 MnT coal in Apr’18, with an increase of 8% M-o-M from 5.16 MnT in Mar’18.

Despite the significant growth on the monthly basis, Taiwan’s total coal imports during the first 4 months of CY18 have been marked 9% lower on the year at 20.56 MnT in Jan’18-Apr’18, compared with 22.51 MnT in Jan’17-Apr’17.

Coal import in Apr’18 had also decreased 12% from the year-ago month, when the country had recorded imports of 6.33 MnT coal in Apr’17.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australia, Indonesia, and Russia remained the top coal exporters to Taiwan in Apr’18, however, the share of coal exports from these countries had fell from 90% in Mar’18 to 84% in Apr’18. During Apr’18, only Russia had recorded increase in monthly coal export to Taiwan, while Australia and Indonesia had witnessed a fall in exports on the monthly basis.

Australian coal export to Taiwan had dropped 5% M-o-M to 2.46 MnT in Apr’18, compared with 2.58 MnT in Mar’18. On the yearly basis, exports had decreased 9% from 2.7 MnT in Apr’17.

Indonesian coal export, too had fell on the monthly and yearly basis, stood 1.22 MnT in May’18.

Russian coal exports had increased 40% on the month to 1.01 MnT in May’18, but were 8% lower on the year than the levels attained in Apr’18.

South Africa and Canada both had witnessed remarkable growth in coal exports to Taiwan in Apr’18. Export from Africa had increased 104% M-o-M to 0.49 MnT, while Canadian coal export had increased 94% on the month to 0.33 MnT in Apr’18.
