Taiwan monthly coal imports in Mar’17 stood at 5.35 MnT, up 6% M-o-M compared with 5.04 MnT in Feb’17, according to the data released by Taiwan Customs.
Coal imports were also high on the yearly basis, compared with 5.16 MnT imported during Mar’16.
During the first quarter of 2017(Jan’17-Mar’17), Taiwan has imported 16.18 MnT coal. Imports have significantly increased by 11% Y-o-Y compared with 14.64 MnT imported during the corresponding period of CY16.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Taiwan majorly imports Bituminous coal, which accounts for more than 90% of the total monthly imports.
Anthracite, Coke, Pet Coke and other grades of coal are also included in Taiwan’s monthly imports.
During Mar’17, imports of Bituminous coal increased 2% M-o-M to 5.08 MnT. While imports of Anthracite drastically reduced from 37992 MT in Feb’17 to just 797 MT in March.

Quantities in MnT
Major Exporting Countries:
Australia remained the top coal exporter to Taiwan. However, Exports in Mar’17 decline on the monthly basis by 18% to 2.30 MnT.
Indonesia, second-largest coal exporter, supplied 1.31 MnT coal in Mar’17. Exports to Taiwan increased by 8% M-o-M, but exports on the yearly basis were still low compared with 1.71 MnT in Mar’16.
Russia, the third-largest coal exporter, recorded an increase of 37% M-o-M and 105% Y-o-Y in their Mar’17 shipments to Taiwan.
Canada and South Africa witnessed major improvement in their monthly coal exports to Taiwan.
Exports from Canada surged from 0.02 MnT in Feb’17 to 0.13 MnT in Mar’17, while exports from Africa rose 88% M-o-M.
