Taiwan: Coal Imports Up 3% M-o-M in Jul’18

Taiwan coal imports have recorded a 3% M-o-M increase in Jul’18 to attain its highest monthly total for CY18.

As per the customs data provided by Taiwan, coal import by the country was 6.67 MnT in Jul’18 against 6.48 MnT in Jun’18, which was also 5% higher on the year from 6.33 MnT in Jul’17.

Taiwan’s coal imports have averaged above 6.5 MnT in the past three months, however, total coal imports recorded in the first 7 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Jul’18) have fallen 4% Y-o-Y to 40.27 MnT, compared with 41.73 MnT in Jan’17-Jul’17 period.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australia remained the largest coal supplier to Taiwan, despite suffering a 6% decline in Jul’18. Export in the month was 3.36 MnT against 3.59 MnT in Jun’18. On the yearly basis, exports had increased 15% from 2.92 MnT in Jul’17.

Indonesian coal supplies to Taiwan rose to its highest monthly total for CY18 in July. Exports were recorded at 1.86 MnT in Jul’18, up 52% M-o-M from 1.22 MnT in Jun’18; which was also 23% higher on the year from 1.51 MnT in Jul’17.

Russia also witnessed growth in exports both on the monthly and yearly basis, to supply 1.15 MnT coal to Taiwan in Jul’18.

Taiwan had recorded nil imports from its fourth largest coal supplier-South Africa, during the month. While Russia, US, Canada, China and Japan were among the other major coal exporters in Jul’18.
