Taiwan: Coal Imports Up 18% M-o-M in Apr’17

Taiwan, one of the major coal importers in the world, has registered an increase in its monthly imports.

Taiwan has imported 6.33 MnT coal in Apr’17, with an increase of 18% M-o-M compared with 5.35 MnT in Mar’17, according to the customs data.

Coal import volume of Apr’17 was almost the same compared with than of Apr’16. The country had imported 6.34 MnT coal in Apr’16.

During the first 4 months of 2017, the country has imported 22.51 MnT coal, up by 7% on the year compared with 20.97 MnT during Jan’16-Apr’16.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Taiwan majorly imports Bituminous coal, which account for more than 90% of the total monthly imports.

Imports of Bituminous coal increased by 20% M-o-M to 6.1 MnT in Apr’17 compared with 5.08 MnT in Mar’17.

Met coke, anthracite, Pet coke and other grades of coal comprise the remaining coal commodities imported by the country.

Quantities in MnT

Major Exporting Countries:
Australia was the major coal exporter to Taiwan in Apr’17 followed by Indonesia, Russia, Canada and South Africa.

Australia exported 2.7 MnT coal in Apr’17. Coal exports increased 17% M-o-M compared with 2.3 MnT in Mar’17. On the yearly basis, monthly exports were lower by 15%, compared with 3.18 MnT in Apr’16.

Indonesia, second-largest coal exporter, also saw remarkable growth in monthly coal supplies to Taiwan. Coal exports in Apr’17 rose by 44% M-o-M to 1.88 MnT. While, exports fell 4% Y-o-Y compared with 1.96 MnT in Apr’16.

Russia was the third-largest coal exporter during the month. The country recorded a growth in coal exports both on the monthly and yearly basis.

Taiwan had imported 65.83 MnT coal in 2016, with Australia catering nearly half of the coal requirements of the country during the year.
