Taiwan coal imports have increased 17% on the year to 5.95 MnT in Jan’19 against 5.08 MnT in Jan’18. Imports were also slightly higher on the month as against 5.91 MnT in Jan’17.
Taiwan had witnessed stable imports last year, where coal intake was recorded at 69.64 MnT in CY18 compared with 69.55 in CY17. Coal supplies from Russia were particularly high, notching 12% growth in CY18.
However, Russian coal supplies to Taiwan were rather subdued in the starting month of CY19.
A country-wise break-up of Taiwan’s coal imports indicate that the country has seen increased deliveries from its major coal suppliers- Australia and Indonesia on the monthly basis, which was sufficient to offset the slump in shipments recorded from Russia and South Africa.
Australian coal export to Taiwan increased 11% M-o-M to 3.02 MnT in Jan’19, which was also 4% higher on the year from 2.89 MnT in Jan’18.
Indonesian coal exports were up 24% on the month to 1.86 MnT in Jan’19, also rising 62% Y-o-Y.
South Africa replaced Russia to become the third-largest coal exporter in Jan’19.
South African export of 0.43 MnT in Jan’19 had fell 14% M-o-M from 0.5 MnT in Dec’18, but was higher than Russian coal supply noted for the month.
Russian exports, on the other hand, were down 59% M-o-M to 0.32 MnT in Jan’19, also marked 60% lower on the year from 0.8 MnT in Jan’18.
Colombia (0.13 MnT), China (0.08 MnT), Canada (0.07 MnT) and South Korea (0.02 MnT) were the other notable coal suppliers to Taiwan in Jan’19.
