Taiwan coal imports have recorded growth both on the monthly and yearly basis.
Taiwan fifth largest coal importer in the world, witnessed a rise in their monthly imports by 16% to 5.79 MnT in Jan’17 compared with 5.01 MnT in Dec’16, as per data released by Taiwan Customs.
Coal imports also rose 31% Y-o-Y compared with 4.41 MnT in Jan’16.
Grade-wise coal Imports:
Taiwan majorly imports Bituminous coal, which accounts for more than 95% of the total imports in Jan’17. Anthracite, Coke, Pet coke and other grades of coal are also imported in small quantities.
In Jan’17, Taiwan imported 5.61 MnT Bituminous coal up by 15% M-o-M compared with 4.86 MnT in Dec’16.
Apart from imports of Coke, all other coal commodities have increased over the month.

Major Exporting Countries:
Australia remains the top coal exporter in Jan’17, which caters about half of the coal to Taiwan.The country exported 3.19 MnT coal in Jan’17, which have risen 22% M-o-M. Besides Yearly exports have increased by 88% compared with 1.70 MnT in Jan’16.
Indonesia, second-largest exporters, exported 1.44 MnT in Jan’17. However, exports have decreased by 6% M-o-M and 16% Y-o-Y.
Russia third-largest coal suppliers to Taiwan recorded increase in their exports by 87% M-o-M. Yearly exports also increase by 18% compared with 0.51 MnT in Jan’16.
Coal exports from Canada have remarkably improved. Coal shipments from the country have gone up by 157% M-o-M and 160% Y-o-Y to 0.23 MnT in Jan’17.
