Taiwan: Coal Imports Down 8% M-o-M in Nov’18

Taiwan’s coal imports have decreased in Nov’18, after recording a steady intake in the last three months.

As per the data provided by customs, the country has imported 5.51 MnT coal in Nov’18, down 8% M-o-M from 6.02 MnT in Oct’18.

The import which comprised majorly of bituminous coal, along with traces of Met coke, Anthracite and Pet coke, however remain higher on the year rising 17% from 4.7 MnT in Nov’17.

Taiwan’s total import was recorded at 63.74 MnT during the first 11 months of CY8 (Jan’18-Nov’18) period, falling short on the year from 64.24 MnT recorded in the same period of CY17.

Major Coal Exporters in Nov’18:

The fall in Taiwan’s coal import could be attributed to the decline in monthly shipments from Australia, Russia and South Africa.

Australian coal export to Taiwan fell 8% M-o-M to 2.68 MnT in Nov’18, but was still 54% higher on the year from 1.74 MnT in Nov’17.

Russia coal export in the first 11 months of CY18 has overtaken the previous year’s total managed in CY17. However, monthly shipment during Nov’18 had fell 53% M-o-M to 0.44 MnT, which notably was the lowest monthly total for CY18.

Coal export from South Africa had decreased 33% M-o-M to 0.16 MnT in Nov’18, which was also 52% lower on the year from 0.33 MnT in Nov’17.

In contrast, Taiwan’s coal import from its second-largest supplier-Indonesia, had increased 41% M-o-M to 1.94 MnT in Nov’18, which was the highest monthly total noted for the CY18.

Colombia, Canada, China and Japan were the other major coal suppliers to Taiwan in Nov’18.
