Taiwan: Coal Imports Down 4% M-o-M in Oct’17

According to the customs data provided by Taiwan, the country’s coal import has dropped 4% M-o-M to 5.65 MnT in Oct’17, compared with 5.87 MnT in Sep’17. Imports had also decreased 20% Y-o-Y compared with 7.04 MnT in Oct’16.

Coal imports from Taiwan have fallen third time in a row on the monthly basis since Jul’17. However, total coal imports by the country during Jan’17-Oct’17 period was still 7% higher than the imports recorded during the same period in 2016.

Taiwan has imported 59.54 MnT coal during Jan’17-Oct’17 against 55.51 MnT in Jan’16-Oct’16.

Bituminous coal had the major share in country’s total monthly imports in Oct’17. Bituminous coal import was 5.47 MnT during the month, which slipped 1% on the month compared with 5.55 MnT in Sep’17.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australia, Indonesia and Russia were the three largest coal exporter, these three nations have been supplying 80% of the total monthly coal quantity to Taiwan.

During Oct’17, Australia had supplied the highest coal shipment of 2.73 MnT, followed by Indonesia (1.43 MnT) and Russia 0.72 (MnT). However, only Russia had recorded growth in monthly coal exports to Taiwan, while exports from Australia and Indonesia have fallen both on the monthly and yearly basis in Oct’17.

Russian coal shipments in CY17 have also surpassed its previous years’ total of 7.06 MnT recorded during CY16. Russia has supplied 8.06 MnT coal to Taiwan during Jan’17-Oct’17 period, which is 14% more than the total exports recorded during Jan’16-Dec’16 period.

Canada, Colombia, the US, South Africa and China were the other major coal exporters in Oct’17.
