Taiwan Coal Imports

Taiwan: Coal Imports Down 11% M-o-M in Nov’19

Coal imports by Taiwan have attained a 7-month low total during Nov’19, as strict environmental regulations toward the end of CY19 have lowered the power generation from coal fired plants in the country.

Taiwan’s coal imports decreased 11% M-o-M to 5.36 MnT in Nov’19 compared with 6.01 MnT in Oct’19, import volume was also marked 3% lower on the year from 5.51 MnT noted in Nov’18.

The drastic fall in imports was attributed to the decline in coal sourcing from its major suppliers-Australia and Indonesia. Apparently, Taiwan’s coal intake from both these sources had recorded its lowest mark since Feb’19.

Coal volumes taken from Australia dropped 17% M-o-M to 2.48 MnT in Nov’19 as against 3 MnT in Oct’19, which was also down 7% Y-o-Y from 2.68 MnT in Nov’18.

Indonesian coal supplies decreased 13% M-o-M to 1.35 MnT in Nov’19. Meanwhile, coal imports from the country registered at 18.41 MnT in the first 11 months of CY19 (Jan-Nov’19), have surpassed the levels attained in CY18.

Coal imports from third-largest supplier-Russia, increased 35% M-o-M to 1.04 MnT in Nov’19, which also recorded a 2-fold rise Y-o-Y compared with 0.44 MnT in Nov’18.

During the first 11 months of CY19 (Jan-Nov’19), Taiwan’s coal imports have reached 62.97 MnT thereby witnessing a modest decline from 63.74 MnT noted in the year-ago period.
