Taiwan’s coal import has fallen 11% M-o-M to 5.91 MnT in Aug’18 compared with 6.67 MnT in Jul’18, which was also 6% lower on the year from 6.29 MnT in Aug’17.
Coal import by the country has slowed down in Aug’18 following strong receipt of 6.5 MnT per month during May’18-Jul’18 period, even as operational coal capacity had risen during the month.
Data from Taipower showed that operational coal capacity rose to 12.24 GW in Aug’18 from 11.03 GW a year earlier and at its highest in two years, as gas fired availability slipped by 5.4% to 13.02 GW during the month.
The fall in monthly coal receipt has further depressed the country’s total imports which have now fallen 4% Y-o-Y to 46.18 MnT in the first 8 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Aug’18) against 46.18 MnT in the same period year ago.
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia remained the largest coal supplier to Taiwan in Aug’18. The country’s export fell 12% M-o-M to 2.96 MnT in Aug’18, which was also 13% lower on the year from 3.42 MnT in Aug’17.
Indonesian coal exports were up 4% M-o-M to 1.93 MnT in Aug’18, also 7% higher on the year from 1.8 MnT in Aug’17.
Russian coal export dropped to its lowest monthly total for CY18, recorded at 0.51 MnT in Aug’18. However, on the yearly basis, export in Aug’18 was slightly higher than the levels attained in Aug’17.
Canada had supplied majority of the remaining monthly total in Aug’18, while no exports were recorded from South Africa for the second-month running.
