Taiwan’s coal imports decreased 7% on the month to 4.74 MnT in Feb’18, compared with 5.08 MnT in Jan’18. Import from the country had also fell 6% on the year compared with 5.04 MnT in Feb’17.
The country had noted higher gain in imports from South Arica and Canada, whereas import from its major coal suppliers had fallen during the month.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Taiwan’s Bituminous coal imports were down 12% on the month to 4.31 MnT in Feb’18 compared with 4.92 MnT in Jan’18. Met coke imports remain almost unchanged from the previous month.
The volume of Pet coke had declined from 34,183 MT in Jan’18 to 10,655 MT in Feb’18.While, only a mere amount of 320 MT of Anthracite coal was imported during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia and Indonesia remained the top two major coal suppliers to Taiwan in Feb’18. However, export from both these countries had fallen on the monthly basis.
Australian coal export was down 22% M-o-M to 2.26 MnT in Feb’18 against 2.89 MnT in Jan’18. On the yearly basis, exports had declined 19% from 2.79 MnT in Feb’17.
Indonesian coal export had also fallen both on the monthly and yearly basis to 0.88 MnT in Feb’18.
South Africa replaced Russia to become the third-largest coal exporter during the month. Coal Export from South Africa had surged nearly 10-fold on the month to 0.74 MnT, which was also 363% higher on the year compared with 0.16 MnT in Feb’17.
South Africa along with Canada, had recorded a significant rise in exports during Feb’18, while export from the other major sources was subdued during the month.
Canadian coal exports to Taiwan were recorded 167% higher on the month, at 0.24 MnT in Feb’18.
