Taiwan Billet Imports Fall 28% in September 2017

As per recent data released by Taiwan customs it is observed that the billet Imports in Taiwan plunged down by 28% M-o-M in Sep’17 & 8% Q-o-Q in Q2 FY18

The nation has imported about 210,000 MT Billet in September 2017 against 290,000 MT in August 2017, decline by 27.58 % on monthly premises. During Sep’17, Japan has exported approximately 80% billet (170,000 MT) to the nation. While the export (Japan to Taiwan) in Aug’17 remains at 150,000 MT.

While, on Y-o-Y in September 2017 imports registered a gain of more than 100% against 100,000 MT in September 2016. In line, on yearly basis, in first 9 months of CY 2017 (Jan-Sep), the imports up by 3.91% to 2.39 MnT against same preceding last year at 2.30 MnT.

Prior to this, in CY16 (Jan-Dec) the country’s billet import was around 3.28 MnT & in CY15 at 2.90 MnT.

As per the SteelMint’s assessment in September 2017, the crude steel production of Taiwan was around 1.90 MnT and in CY17(Jan-Sep) it was approximately 16.98 MnT. Prior to this it was at 21.57 MnT in CY16 & 21.37 MnT in CY15.

Country wise:

During September 2017, the largest exporter of Billet to Taiwan was Japan – 170,000 MT, Russia – 30,000 MT & Australia at 20,000 MT.

Similarly, in the total billet imports during 2017 (Jan-Sep), the major sellers of billet to Taiwan was – Japan 1.21 MnT (50.71%), Russia 0.61 MnT (25.56%), United Arab Emirates 0.32 MnT (13.28%), Iran 0.16 MnT (6.51%) & China 0.08 MnT (3.21%).

Quaterly Analysis

The recent SteelMint’s Statistics report showed imports of Billet in Taiwan during Q2 FY18 (Jul-Sept’17) at 0.73 MnT, fell by 7.59% Q-o-Q when it compared with Q1 FY18 (Apr-Jun’17) at 0.79 MnT. While, on yearly premises the exports gain by 8.95% in Q2 FY18 against Q2 FY17 at 0.67 MnT.

Further, it was also noticed that on half yearly calculations of Taiwan billet imports jump up by 7.80% to 1.52 MnT in H1 FY18 compared with 1.41 MnT in H1 FY17.
