Scrap imports from US jumped almost three fold while that from Turkey declined to half in Sept’18
Sweden – one of the major scrap exporters among EU-28 has witnessed a considerable rise in its scrap exports in Sept’18. As per recent customs data, the country exported 107,164 MT ferrous scrap, up 34% M-o-M in Sept’18 as against 79,737 MT ferrous scrap in Aug’18.
On yearly basis, the country witnessed fall of 26% Y-o-Y as against 145,553 MT ferrous scrap in Sept’17. Notably, scrap exports in Sept’17 were recorded second highest in CY17.
On quarterly basis, scrap exports fall 14% Q-o-Q to 256,827 MT ferrous scrap in Q3’CY18 as against 299,187 MT in Q2’CY18. While exports in Q3’18 declined 20% Y-o-Y as against 321,136 MT ferrous scrap recorded in Q3’CY17.
The country exported 1,636,899 MT iron ore in Sept’18, down 15.5% M-o-M as against 1,937,227 MT in Aug’18. Fall in crude steel production and iron ore exports could have resulted in increased Sweden’s scrap exports in Sept’18.

United States remained the largest scrap importer in Sept’18 – United States stepped up at the largest importer position surpassing Turkey in Sept’18. US imported 28,050 MT ferrous scrap, up 213% M-o-M occupying highest 26% share in total Swedish scrap exports.
Followed by other prominent importers like Germany (13,600 MT, +13% M-o-M), Norway (12,578 MT, +87% M-o-M), Pakistan (10,715 MT, +21% M-o-M) and Denmark (8,926 MT, +80% M-o-M) witnessed considerable rise in scrap imports from Sweden in Sept’18.
Turkey stepped down at fifth largest importer position from the top supplier in Sept’18. Amid volatile currency and dull finish steel demand, Turkey observed fall in imports by 65% M-o-M to 9,970 MT in Sept’18 from Sweden.
Crude steel production decreased 20% M-o-M in Sept’18 – According to World Steel Association, Sweden’s crude steel production recorded at 0.26 MnT in Sept’18, down 20% M-o-M as against 0.324 MnT in Aug’18. However, production has increased back to 0.375 MnT levels in Oct’18.
Ferrous scrap exports down 16% during Jan-Sept’18 – Sweden exported 839,982 MT ferrous scrap during first nine months in CY18, down 16.44% Y-o-Y as against 1,005,210 MT during Jan-Sept’17. The country produced 3.73 MnT crude steel during Jan-Oct’18, marginally down 4% as against 3.90 MnT during same period last year.
