Turkey remained quiet for Swedish scrap witnessing nil volumes of scrap imports in May’18.
Sweden – one of the major scrap exporters among EU-28 has witnessed a considerable fall by 19% M-o-M in its scrap exports in May’18 as compared with its scrap exports recorded in Apr’18. As per recent customs data, Sweden exported 90,107 MT ferrous scrap in May’18 as against 111,834 MT exports recorded in Apr’18.
On yearly basis, the country witnessed decline of 15% Y-o-Y in ferrous scrap exports in May’18 as against 106,096 MT exports in May’17.
Turkey remained silent for Sweden scrap imports in May’18 – Turkey remained absolutely silent for Swedish scrap amid less economic and political stability and dull finish steel demand in the country. Turkish scrap imports from Sweden dropped down from 15,691 MT in Apr’18 to nil volumes in May’18. Notably, the country had hit lowest scrap imports in May’18 to 1.65 MnT ferrous scrap in first half 2018.

United States remained largest importer of scrap from Sweden in May’18 – United States imported 30,170 MT ferrous scrap occupying 33% share in total scrap exports from Sweden. US recorded marginal fall of 3% M-o-M as against 31,139 MT scrap imports recorded in Apr’18. Prominent importers like Pakistan (8,304 MT, +38% M-o-M), Denmark (7,555 MT, +25% M-o-M) and Germany (11,227 MT, +86% M-o-M) have witnessed considerable rise in scrap imports from Sweden. While scrap exports to Norway dropped marginally by 3% M-o-M to 12,850 MT in May’18.
Ferrous scrap exports from Sweden fell 14% Y-o-Y during Jan-May’18 – The country exported 485,907 MT ferrous scrap in the first five months of CY18 as against 567,050 MT ferrous scrap exports during the same period last year.
During Jan-May’18, fall in scrap imports from major importers like Turkey and Germany and high global scrap prices compared to last year could have resulted in fall in Sweden scrap exports. On the other hand, USA, Denmark and Pakistan witnessed marginal growth in imports from Sweden this year amid improving demand.
United States remained largest scrap importer from Sweden during Jan-May’18 – United States imported highest 93,257 MT ferrous scrap followed by second largest importer Turkey importing 92,985 MT occupying 19% share each of total scrap exports from Sweden during first five months CY18. Followed by other prominent importers like Norway, Pakistan, Denmark and Germany occupying 14%, 9%, 7% and 6% share.
According to World Steel Association, Sweden’s crude steel production stood nearly stable during H1 2018 which recorded at 2.438 MnT as against 2.407 MnT steel produced during same period last year.
