Steel Furnaces in Punjab to get impacted on Short Supply of Power

Increase in power demand, delayed monsoons and low supply from integrated power plants have forces Punjab state electricity board to increase the peak load hours for industries in the state. This means production will come down during this period.

Er. K D Chaudhri, Chairman cum Managing Director, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) said that due to sudden increase in demand for power because of few factors such as rise in temperature, poor monsoon, low availability of power from the new private thermal plants and lesser hydel generation, PSPCL is constrained to go for load shedding.

Er. Chaudhri informed that PSPCL’s preparation were adequate in anticipation of poor monsoon but reduced power supply from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and lesser hydel generation, widened the gap in demand & supply, forcing PSPCL to impose temporary regulatory measures on all category of consumers.

In view of precarious situation, S Sukhbir Singh Badal, Hon’ble Dy CM of Punjab, has held meetings with Sh. Sadananda Gowda, Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Government of India, who has assured to get Coal supply expedited for Thermal Plants in Punjab.

The situation is likely to improve in 4 to 5 days when Coal supplies start reaching Independent Power Plants in Punjab.

Er. Chaudhri appealed to people of Punjab to bear the regulatory measures imposed by PSPCL in view of sudden spurt in power demand owing to paddy transplantation, rise in temperature and poor monsoon.

Earlier, induction was running for full time i.e. for 21 hrs but now it will work only for 12 hrs. There will be no impact on rolling mills’ production as it will continue to run for 12-15 hrs per day. Therefore, it is anticipated that Ingot prices may increase by INR 200-300/MT and scrap prices may fall by INR 200-300/MT,” shared a manufacturer based in Mandigobindgarh,Punjab.[/su_quote]
