South Korea: Thermal coal imports from Australia up 25% m-o-m in Jun’21

In Jun’21, amid unusually hot weather that led to increased power demand and unplanned nuclear outages, South Korea’s thermal coal imports from Australia rose by 25% m-o-m to 4.01 mn t while y-o-y the same surged by 95%. South Korea’s coal imports from Indonesia, however, declined by 28% y-o-y in June to 1.13 mn t. Total thermal coal imported by South Korea from various countries stood at 7.89 mn t in June, up 15% m-o-m and 3% y-o-y.
