South Korea coal imports have witness a jump of 17% in monthly coal imports during Jan’19.
Data provided by customs shows that country’s coal import was recorded 13.81 MnT in Jan’19 against 11.83 MnT in Dec’18, which was also 5% higher on the year from 13.15 MnT in Jan’18.
A significant rise in non-coking coal imports was boosted by higher shipments from Australia and Indonesia, which accounted for more than two-third of the total coal volume in Jan’19.
Grade-wise break-up of imports indicate that non-coking coal shipments had surged 37% on the month to 11.17 MnT in Jan’19, which was the highest total since CY10 (the period up to which CoalMint has maintained customs data for South Korean imports).
Coking coal imports dropped 21% M-o-M to 1.74 MnT; along with Anthracite coal which had fell 29% on the month to 0.54 MnT in Jan’19.
Pet coke and Met coke imports were recorded at 0.17 MnT and 0.04 MnT respectively.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australian coal supplies to South Korea had increased 59% M-o-M to 5.33 MnT in Jan’19, to mark its highest coal export since Apr’16. Exports were also 23% higher on the year from 4.33 MnT in Jan’18.
Indonesia, South Korea’s second largest coal supplier, had also witnessed a multi-month high exports during Jan’19. Exports from the country rose 26% on the month to 4.15 MnT, marking its highest total since Sep’17.
Russian coal exports decreased 17% M-o-M to 1.72 MnT in Jan’19, noting the only monthly decline among the top 5 coal suppliers.
Canadian coal exports were up 11% M-o-M to 1.27 MnT, while exports by Colombia had remain almost unchanged m-o-m, marked at 0.45 MnT in Jan’19.
