South Korean coal imports have rebounded after falling in Oct’18, to attain its highest monthly total in Nov’18. As per the data provided by customs, the country’s coal import stood 13% higher on the month at 13.43 MnT in Nov’18 against 11.87 MnT in Oct’18.
Driven by record-high supplies from its major exporter-Australia, South Korea’s coal import in Nov’18 was also 15% higher on the year from 11.69 MnT in Nov’17.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
A grade-wise break-up indicates that South Korean non-coking coal imports had increased 14% M-o-M to 9.75 MnT, recording a 7-month high total in Nov’18. Anthracite coal imports on the other hand had attained its highest total for CY18 during the month.
Coking coal imports slightly came down during the month, marked at 1.92 MnT in Nov’18 against 1.97 MnT in Oct’18. Imports of Pet coke and Met coke were recorded at 0.07 MnT and 0.04 MnT respectively in Nov’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia, Indonesia and Russia remained South Korea’s main coal suppliers, accounting for around 35%, 25% and 20% of total imports, respectively.
Australian coal export had rose to its highest monthly total for the 2017-18 period, marked at 4.93 MnT in Nov’18. Exports had increased 32% M-o-M from 3.74 MnT in Oct’18, which was also 14% higher on the year from 4.33 MnT in Nov’17.
Indonesian coal exports had also rose 13% on the month to 3.35 MnT in Nov’18 but were down 4% Y-o-Y from 3.5 MnT in Nov’17.
Russian coal exports were up 8% M-o-M to 2.8 MnT in Nov’18 against 2.59 MnT in Oct’18, also rising 93% Y-o-Y from 1.45 MnT in Nov’17.
The growth in South Korea’s coal import from its major suppliers was offset by a lower intake from Canada. Notably, South Korea had received its lowest monthly shipment from Canada, recorded at 0.72 MnT during Nov’18.
South Africa had witness a remarkable growth in coal exports to South Korea, while Colombia, China, US and Vietnam were the other notable coal suppliers during the month.
