South Korean coal imports have fallen on the monthly basis, after witnessing highest value in Sep’17.
According to the customs data, South Korean coal import has decreased 26% M-o-M to 11.01 MnT in Oct’17. The country had imported 14.92 MnT coal in Sep’17, which was the highest monthly total since CY10, the period upto which CoalMint has maintained customs data.
On the yearly basis, Import in Oct’17 was 1% higher than the imports of 10.90 MnT coal recorded in Oct’16. Moreover, total coal imported during the first 10 months of CY17 (Jan’17-Oct’17) has grown 10% Y-o-Y to 126.27 MnT, compared with 115.25 MnT during Jan’16-Oct’16 period.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Import of all the major coal grades have fallen in Oct’17. Non-Coking coal imports having the largest share in total imports, was down to 7.73 MnT in Oct’17 from 10.77 MnT in Sep’17.
Coking coal imports dropped 15% M-o-M to 2.06 MnT in Oct’17. Likewise, Anthracite, Pet Coke and Met coke imports fell 36%, 67% and 50% respectively.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia remained the top exporter to South Korea, with total export of 3.52 MnT coal in Oct’17. Exports were down 23% M-o-M compared with 4.58 MnT in Sep’17. Also, on the yearly basis, exports were 4% lower compared to 3.67 MnT coal in Oct’16.
Indonesia was the second-largest coal exporter in Oct’17. Monthly exports decreased 38% M-o-M to 2.82 MnT, which was also 11% lower on the year compared to 3.17 MnT coal in Oct’16.
Russia was the third-largest coal exporter; the country’s coal export increased 12% Y-o-Y to 1.99 MnT in Oct’17. While on the monthly basis, export fell 21% compared with 2.53 MnT in Sep’17.
