South America: Peru may declare emergency to restore copper production

Peru, the world’s second-largest producer of copper, is likely to declare state of emergency near Southern Copper’s Cuajone mine as protests hit mining activities in the country. A protest that began on 28 Feb’22 demanding financial compensation has affected 20% of Peru’s copper output. The country produced 2.3 mn t of the red metal in 2021.
