South African Coal Exports Up 20% in Nov’16

South African monthly coal export rose by 20% in Nov’16 compared with last month. Yearly coal exports also recorded a growth of 11%.

South Africa, one of the largest thermal coal exporters in the globe shipped about 7.83 MnT of coal to the different destinations in Nov’16. The monthly coal export increase by 20% compared with Oct’16.This is the second-highest monthly coal exports in 2016 followed by 8.06 MnT shipments in Sep’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Out of the total exported quantity, more than 90% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Anthracite, coke and other grades. During Nov’16, the country has shipped 7.36 MnT Bituminous coal, 0.16 MnT Anthracite, and other coal grades account for 0.16 MnT.

South African Coal Export in 2016:
During Jan-Nov’16, total coal exports were recorded at 69.69 MnT down by 3% as compared to 71.78 MnT in the corresponding period of previous year.

Country-wise Coal Exports in 2016:
India is one of the largest buyers of South African thermal coal, country’s whole sponge and Cement industry is largely dependent on South African coal. Out of the total annual exports, the country receives about more than 60% of coal from South Africa.

During Nov’16, India received 3.14 MnT coal, down merely by 1% M-o-M. Beside, Yearly coal exports decline by 4%.

India’s slow demand in the month of November has resulted from persisting higher offers and lack of coal supply. At the end of Oct’16, South African 5500 NAR coal prices cross the level of USD 90/MT, CFR India.

South Korea, second-largest coal importer of South African coal, received 1 MnT coal in Nov’16. Monthly coal imports have increased by more than 0.57 MnT compared to Oct’16. However, South Korea did not import any coal in Nov’15.

Pakistan, third major coal importer, acquire 0.53 MnT South African coal in Nov’16. Coal imports have significantly increased by 68% M-o-M. Yearly shipments also follow the similar trend, recorded 59% growth Y-o-Y.
