South African thermal coal exports for May 2022 is expected to be around 4.6 mnt, down 10% against April 2022. In May 2021, the exports were at 4.89 mnt. The fall in exports is attributed to tepid demand from India and Pakistan amid elevated prices, as both the countries account for half of the country’s total exports. In near-term, South African coal exports might remain sluggish amid revised import/export duties in India.
