South African Coal Exports Down by 19% in Jun’16

South African monthly coal export fall by 19% in Jun’16 as compared to last month, besides yearly exports up by 8% during Jun’16.

South Africa, a largest thermal coal exporter shipped about 5.33 MnT coal to different destinations in Jun’16. The monthly coal export have recorded a sharp fall by 19% compared to May’16 and also noted a year growth by 8% as compared to Jun’15.

Out of the total monthly exports, South Africa basically shipped more than 50% of coal to India. The total shipped quantity comprises 95% of Bituminous coal and rest Anthracite, coke and other grades.

South African coal shipments reduced in Jun’16 on the wake of constantly rising FoB offers for South African grades, which have hit the highest since Dec’14. Current offers for 6000 NAR thermal coal is assessed at USD 65-66/MT, FoB for Aug’16 shipments.

However, India’s slowing demand in monsoon also have a strong impact on South African coal trade in Jun’16. Constantly, rising South African index deterring global buyer’s interest.

The first six month of the year recorded a marginal fall in Coal exports by 4% from South Africa to different destinations. Out of the total exports of the year, the country had shipped about 60% of coal to India. While, shipments to India has also recorded a notable fall by 17% to 21.5 MnT this year during Jan-Jun’16.

Country-wise coal export in Jun’16
India is one of the largest buyers of South African thermal coal as the country’s whole sponge industry is largely dependent on South African coal. India took (52%) about 2.8 MnT coal during the month, down by 38% compared to last month. Besides Pakistan, Turkey, UAE and Egypt emerges as the largest destinations for South African coal in Jun’16.
