Western India based steel mills have resumed imported iron ore bookings from South Africa. According to sources, a lump import vessel of about 90,000 t is expected to arrive at Kandla towards end Dec/early Jan. With rising domestic iron ore and pellet prices, imported lumps inquiries have picked up. South Africa’s last iron ore shipment to India was seen in the month of Mar’20 at 0.11 mn t.

South Africa’s iron ore export shipments fall in Oct’20 – South African total iron ore export shipments in Oct’20 witnessed 38% decrease on a monthly basis to 3.74 mn t, against 6.03 mn t in Sep’20, according to bulk vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint.
On a yearly basis too, exports recorded 4% rise against 3.62 mn t in Oct’19.
Shipments to China fell 65% in Oct’20 – South Africa’s total iron ore export to China for the month of Oct’20 was recorded at 1.50 mn t, down 65% as compared to 4.28 mn t in Sep’20. Netherland stood second largest at 0.56 mn t (up 39% m-o-m) followed by Japan at 0.29 mn t.
South African exports to China dropped amid fewer working days due to week long Golden week holidays in October (1st Oct- 7th Oct).
