South Africa Pig Iron Exports Rise 27%, April 2017

South Africa pig iron exports surge by around 11,900 MT (27.47%) M-o-M & 24,400 MT (79.12%) Y-o-Y in April’18, according to the customs.

The nation has exported about 55,293 MT pig iron during April’18 against 43,375 MT in March’18. United States (34,763 MT) remains the largest importer in April’18, inline Netherlands second topped the list with 5,003 MT of imports from the nation .

Coming to total exports in CY18 (Jan-Apr) it has been registered at 141,908 MT, rise slightly as against 141,867 MT in the same period during 2017. On yearly calculation, the country exported around 544,283 MT in CY17 & at 312,375 MT in CY16

Country-wise South African Pig iron exports

— USA, the largest importer of South African Pig iron has imported 57,763 MT Pig iron in 2018 (Jan-Apr) against 37,742 MT in 2017 (Jan-Apr). In Apr’18, it was noticed that US imports recorded the highest volume since June 2014.

— Netherlands, the second largest Pig iron importer of South African Pig iron has imported 16,509 MT Pig iron in 2018 (Jan-Apr) against 22,005 MT in 2017 (Jan-Apr).

— Italy, the third largest Pig iron exporter to South Africa has exported 16,006 MT in 2018 (Jan-Apr) against 15,507 MT in 2017 (Jan-Apr).

Market Updates

— In Apr’18, India remains the largest importer of ferrous scrap from South Africa with 16,323 MT. While, Pakistan & Bangladesh imported around 12,020 MT & 10,606 MT in the month

— The global export offers of steel grade Pig Iron are assessed at USD 395-405/MT FoB Brazil & USD 385-395/MT FoB India.

— Presently, export offers of iron ore lumps, Fe 64%, South Africa are at USD 84/MT CNF India.

— South Africa Iron Ore Exports to India declined 38% M-o-M & stood at 0.3 MnT in Apr’18 as against 0.48 MnT in Mar’18.

— South African RB2 (5500 NAR) coal offers are assessed at USD 90/MT on FoB basis & USD 105/MT CNF India.
