South Africa pig iron exports decline by around 18,000 MT (32%) M-o-M in May 2018 after recorded the highest volume of exports in April 2018.
The nation has exported about 37,473 MT pig iron during May’18 against 55,293 MT in April’17. US remains the largest importer; however in the month of May’18, US imports from the nation decline sharply by 85% & stood at 5,200 MT as against 34,763 MT in April’18. Inline, no major Pig iron exports recorded in May’18 from South Africa to Germany, Taiwan & Thailand.
Coming to total exports in CY 2018 (Jan-May), South Africa has exported about 179,381 MT Pig iron; down by around 5.24% as compared to 189,316 MT in the same preceding last year. While, on yearly basis in May’18, exports of Pig iron from the nation decline by 21.02% against 47,449 MT in May’17.
Further in CY18 (Jan-May), the major buyers of South African Pig iron was – United States (62,963 MT), Italy (23,006 MT), and Netherlands (21,509 MT).
In the month of May 2018, the crude steel production of South Africa rise by 16.91% to 568,100 MT against 485,900 MT in Apr’18 and in CY18 (Jan-May) it was approximately 2,649,500 MT. Meanwhile, in CY17 the figure of crude steel production stood at 6,301,800 MT, & 6,139,300 MT in CY16.
Market Updates
— As per SteelMint Stats, it was noticed that in May’18, India (5,779 MT) & Bangladesh (7,350 MT) recorded the highest volume of pig iron imports from South Africa.
— South African coal export has decline 8.30% M-o-M to 6.07 MnT in May’18 against 6.62 MnT in Apr’18. South African RB2 (5500 NAR) coal offers are assessed at USD 90/MT on FoB basis & USD 105/MT CNF India.
— South African Iron ore exports hit 9 month high in May’18. Presently, export offers of iron ore lumps, Fe 64%, South Africa are at USD 89/MT CNF India.
— The global export offers of steel grade Pig Iron are assessed at USD 380-385/MT FoB Brazil & USD 380-390/MT FoB India.
