South African manganese ore exports stood at 1.93 million tonnes (mnt) in Nov’21 – up by 17% m-o-m as against 1.65 mn t in Oct’21. China, India followed by Singapore, remained the largest importers of the material.
In Jan-Nov’21, total manganese ore exports from South Africa rose by 9% y-o-y to 19.60 mn t from 18.01 mn t in the corresponding period last year.
Why have manganese ore exports risen?
- Exports to major Asian countries up: South African manganese ore exports to China surged by 33% m-o-m owing to increased demand from China following the removal of production restrictions. In addition, China continued to be the largest importer of manganese ore (Mn37%) from South Africa at 1.19 mn t in Nov’21. Manganese ore export volumes to India rose 37% m-o-m to 0.34 mn t in November. India saw very good buying interest in South African manganese ore for November shipments, despite the increase in prices for the month as against October’s offer.
- Exports to Singapore down: Exports of the material to Singapore reduced by 20% m-o-m to 0.06 mn t in Nov’21 as against 0.07 mn t in Oct’21. Enough inventory held by Singapore in Oct’21 shrunk the South African manganese ore exports volumes in Nov’21.
South African silico manganese exports fall 83% m-o-m in Nov’21
According to customs data maintained by SteelMint, South African silico manganese exports dropped 83% m-o-m to 3,517 t as against 20,694 t in Oct’21. Italy (1,705 t, up 68% m-o-m) and Spain (1,026 t, up 31% m-o-m) were the largest buyers of South African silico manganese. The fall in exports was mainly because of no exports to USA.
However, ferro manganese exports surged by 34% to 9,738 t m-o-m in Nov’21, mainly because of the rise in exports to European countries like Germany (by 79%), Austria (by 150%), and Italy (by 21%). However, exports to USA reduced slightly by 2% but USA was the largest importer of South African ferro manganese.
