South African Exports in Jan’19 got back to normal levels after a steep fall in Dec’18. In Dec, the decrease in the exports were mainly due to the damage of the railway bridge in Sardinia at the end of November. Strict power limit in Inner Mongolia around year-end also made the producers cautious of buying ores in the ending periods of CY 18. China remained the major importer of Manganese and Chrome Ore for South Africa. Escalation in Chinese imports can be attributed to the appreciation in the Chinese Yuan, making it cheaper for the Chinese producers to import.
South African Manganese Ore Exports went up by 24.4% in Jan’19 as compared to the previous month. In Jan, the 68% of the total manganese Ore exports went to China. The total exports in Jan’19 for Manganese Ore were 1.5MnT, of which 1MnT was exported to China. Chinese imports for South African Manganese Ore increased by significantly by 31.4% M-o-M. No export activity was noticed in the month of Dec’18 for Malaysia, whereas imports by Japan went highest for Dec’18 in CY 18.
South African Chrome Ore Exports have started to regain its market. Chrome Ore Exports increased by 33% in Jan’19, however, the exports were marginally low as compared to the exports during the same period in the previous year. China and Mozambique remained the major two importers for South African Chrome Ore. Total exports of Chrome Ore in Jan’19 is 1.05MnT, of which 586,491MT went directly to China which accounted for 56% of the total exports and Mozambique had 33% shares in the total South African Chrome Ore exports.
