South Africa: Iron ore export shipments to India drop sharply in CY’20

South Africa’s total iron ore export shipments in CY’20 stood at 60.22 mn t, against 60.32 mn t in CY’19, according to bulk vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. On a monthly basis, exports were recorded at 6 mn t in Dec’20 against 5.25 mn t in Nov’20.

South Africa iron ore export shipments to India down 76% in CY’20

Imported iron ore lumps to India fell from 1.05 mn t in CY’19 to 0.25 mn t in CY’20 due to rise in global iron ore prices. The annual average prices of imported South African lump prices to India increased to $118/t CNF Kandla, up by 6% y-o-y.

The current assessment for imported lump stands at around $185-187/t, CNF Kandla, largely stable w-o-w. Mills continue to prefer domestic ore due to cost effectiveness. The global iron ore fines (Fe 62%) index was assessed at $173.6/t, CNF China (assessed on 18th Jan), up by around $3/t w-o-w.

Shipments to China picked up by 3% in CY’20

South Africa’s total iron ore export to China for CY’20 was recorded at 40.37 mn t, as compared with 39.12 mn t in CY’19. Netherlands was the second largest importer at 4.66 mn t (up 16% y-o-y) followed by Korea at 4.61 mn t.
