South Africa Iron Ore Export Shipments Fell in May’20

South African iron ore export shipments in May’20 witnessed slight drop on a monthly basis to 4.14 MnT, against 4.16 MnT in Apr’ 20, according to bulk vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. The force majeure so announced in April’20 amid COVID-19 led to fall in exports.

South African export shipments to India dropped to nil for the month
The total iron ore exports to India for the month continued to remain nil for the second consecutive month. Exports in the month of Mar’20 were at 0.11 MnT.

SteelMint’s assessment of South African imported lumps to India witnessed at USD 110-115/MT, CNF Kandla. As per market sources report to SteelMint, the prices for lumps are not viable and hence, booking for lumps remains on the lower side. Also, amid higher price offers, the steel mills have increased preference for pellets over lumps. Jindal Saw pellet offers this week stands at INR 8,200/MT DAP Kandla.

South African export shipments to China down 38% in May’20
South Africa’s total iron ore export to China for the month of May’20 recorded at 1.80 MnT, down 38% as compared to 2.91 MnT in Apr’20.

Exports to Netherland were recorded at 0.38 MnT, up 32% against 0.29 MnT in Apr ’20. Exports to Slovenia marked at 0.19 MnT followed by Korea at 0.17 MnT.
