South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Stable in July

South Africa one of the leading scrap exporters has observed stability in its ferrous scrap exports in Jul’18 as compared to exports recorded in Jun’18. As per recent customs data, the country exported 44,947 MT ferrous scrap in Jul’18, up 3% M-o-M as against exports recorded at 43,506 MT ferrous scrap in Jun’18.

On yearly premises, the country witnessed rise of 22% Y-o-Y in its scrap exports in Jul’18 as against 36,699 MT in Jul’17.

Port wise – In Jul’18, the majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban (41%), Johannesburg (30%), Cape Town (12%), Pretoria (10%) and Port Elizabeth (7%).

India remained the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap – India witnessed considerable fall in scrap imports from South Africa by 37% M-o-M in July. India imported 15,535 MT while other prominent importers Pakistan (13,643 MT) and Bangladesh (12,844 MT) have witnessed 36% and 142% rise in scrap imports in Jul’18 on increased restocking ahead of holidays in August. Indonesia recorded a rise of 86% M-o-M in scrap imports in Jul’18 from South Africa.

Top three importers India, Pakistan and Bangladesh occupied 35%, 30% and 29% share individually comprising total 94% share of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa in Jul’18.

South African scrap exports almost stable Y-o-Y during Jan-Jul’18 – South Africa exported 280,870 MT ferrous scrap during Jan-Jul’18, down 1% Y-o-Y as against 283,199 MT scrap imports recorded during the first seven months of last year.

India imported highest 128,506 MT ferrous scrap in Jan-Jul’18, up 27% Y-o-Y as against 101,068 MT in Jan-Jul’17. Pakistan imported 89,541 MT, down 20%Y-o-Y while Bangladesh witnessed a sharp growth of 83% Y-o-Y in scrap imports from South Africa amid increasing scrap consumption in the country.

According to the data released by World Steel Association, crude steel production in South Africa fell down marginally at 0.535 MnT in July, down 2% M-o-M as against 0.547 MnT produced in the last month Jun’18.

South African Pig iron exports fall 19% in July – The country exported 62,363 MT Pig iron in Jul’18 as against 77,017 MT in Jun’18, down 19% M-o-M. Fall in Pig iron exports could have reflected in marginal rise in ferrous scrap exports from South Africa in Jul’18.
