South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Remain Stable in Q3 CY17

South Africa’s ferrous scrap exports have remained unchanged Q-o-Q in Q3-CY17. The country has exported 0.10 MnT ferrous scrap in Q3-CY17. While in Q2-CY17 as well, ferrous scrap exports from South Africa summed up at 0.10 MnT. However, exports fell by 47% in Q3-CY17 against 0.19 MnT exports in Q3-CY16.

As per recently released customs data, the country exported 0.03 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17, On M-o-M basis ferrous scrap exports remained stable in Sept’17 as exports were 0.03 MnT also in Aug’17.

South Africa has witnessed a sharp fall by 57% Y-o-Y in Sept’17 as South Africa’s exports were at 0.07 MnT in Sept’16.

During first nine months of CY17 (Jan-Sept’17), ferrous scrap exports from South Africa summed up to 0.34 MnT, down 24% against 0.45 MnT exports during same period in CY16.

Majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Pakistan remained largest importer of South African ferrous scrap –

Pakistan continued to remain largest importer of South African ferrous scrap so far in CY17 with 0.13 MnT imports during Jan-Sept’17. However, total imports to India summed up to 0.12 MnT during the same period. Pakistan and India occupied 38% & 35% shares of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa during Jan-Sept’17 period respectively.

During Jan-Sept’17, Bangladesh doubled ferrous scrap imports from South Africa against 0.02 MnT imports during same time frame of last year while India and Pakistan have significantly declined its imports from South Africa than the previous year.

In Sept’17, top three importers of South African ferrous scrap were India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and each of them imported 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap sharing 33.33% of total exports. Other major importers like South Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam registered nil imports in Sept’17.
