South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Fall 27% in Jan’18

As per recently released customs data, South Africa has witnessed 28% Y-o-Y fall in ferrous scrap exports in Jan’18. The country exported 27,752 MT ferrous scrap in Jan’18 while South Africa’s exports were at 38,206 MT in Dec’17.

On Y-o-Y basis ferrous scrap exports witnessed a fall of 39% Y-o-Y in Jan’18. South African scrap exports were 45,588 MT in Jan’17.

South African ferrous scrap exports remained concentrated to Pakistan, Bangladesh and India in 2017.

Over high global scrap prices, South African scrap exports registered third monthly consecutive fall in Jan’18.

In 2017, South Africa exported 463,303 MT ferrous scrap witnessing decline of 28% Y-o-Y against 639,954 MT ferrous scrap exports in 2016.

Majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Pakistan remained largest importer of South African ferrous scrap –

Pakistan remained the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap in Jan’18. Pakistan imported 12,319 MT ferrous scrap, down 32% M-o-M as against 18,040 MT ferrous scrap in Dec’17, followed by India (11,961 MT, +17% M-o-M). Pakistan and India occupied 44% & 43% shares of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa respectively in Jan’18. Other major importers were Taiwan (1,236 MT), Indonesia and Bangladesh.

In 2017, India’s ferrous scrap imports from South Africa fell nearly to half (-47% Y-o-Y) while Bangladesh registered 85% growth as against ferrous scrap imports during CY16.
