South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Down 25% M-o-M in Aug’17

As per recent customs data, South Africa-one of the major exporter of ferrous scrap has witnessed a fall in its ferrous scrap exports in Aug’17. South Africa exported 0.03 MnT ferrous scrap in Aug’17, down 25 % M-o-M as ferrous scrap exports were 0.04 MnT in Jul’17.

On yearly premises, the exports witnessed sharp fall by 57% Y-o-Y in Aug’17 as South Africa’s exports were recorded at 0.07 MnT in Aug’16.

During first eight months of CY17 (Jan-Aug’17), ferrous scrap exports from South Africa summed up to 0.31 MnT, the fall of 18% noted against 0.38 MnT exports during the same period in CY16.

Majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Pakistan remained largest importer of South African ferrous scrap –

Pakistan continued to remain largest importer of South African ferrous scrap so far in CY17 with 39% share (0.12 MnT) in South African scrap exports during Jan-Aug’17 followed by India with a share of 36% (0.11 MnT).

Pakistan and India both imported 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap each from South Africa in Aug’17.

Other major importers like Bangladesh, South Korea and Vietnam registered nil imports from South Africa in Aug’17.
