South African utility Eskom has cut 2,276 Gwh of power generation during Jan-Jun’22 due to labour strikes, facility maintenance and creaking thermal coal capacity. This is more than 90% of what it had cut in the entire 2021. Eskom has a generation capacity of about 45 GW, of which 3.38 GW is on planned maintenance, while 18.3 GW capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns, forcing the company to extend power cut in the current week also.
